
Accelerograph networks are generally of two types: regional and structural. The national accelerograph network is responsible for the accurate recording of earthquake ground motions throughout the country. Applications of the national accelerograph network include determining peak ground accelerations at various locations, assisting in the development of construction standards, and revising regulations related to Standard 2800. Provided there is sufficient station density and real-time data availability, the network can also issue earthquake early warnings. Furthermore, if algorithms such as the SI (Seismic Intensity) are implemented in the equipment, these devices can issue control commands. Such commands may be used for shutting off gas and electricity, stopping trains, halting elevators, opening gates, or cutting water flow in hydroelectric power plants.
In Iran, the first accelerograph network was established using equipment from the American company Kinemetrics. Later, during the 1990s, several Guralp devices were added to this aging network. Parsian Seismograph Company is the first Iranian firm to produce precise accelerometers. However, due to extreme neglect and resistance from the Road, Housing, and Urban Development Research Center, the potential of this knowledge-based company has yet to receive the slightest recognition. This situation is a clear example of the disregard for national talent.
