Seismological Network System

Seismograph networks are generally classified into three types: local, regional, and global. The primary objectives of establishing seismograph networks include studying fault activity, seismicity trends, changes in tectonic regimes, refining hazard analyses, tomography, and earthquake forecasting. The function of seismograph networks in dams is primarily to prevent induced seismic events, continuously monitor regional seismicity and tectonic regime changes, and, in specific cases, facilitate emergency reservoir evacuation. These networks also help determine earthquake direction for refining accelerograph analyses and assist national networks in accurately locating earthquake epicenters.National networks, if sufficiently dense, can perform much of the functionality of local networks; however, they typically have low station density. In Iran, the number of stations in the national network is so limited that it can barely calculate epicenters with errors under 15 kilometers. Unfortunately, the approach of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran—expanding the network using broadband instruments—has contributed to this deficiency. Global networks are designed primarily for detecting and studying major earthquakes. Additionally, one notable application of global networks is the identification and location of earthquakes induced by nuclear tests.

Parsian Seismograph Company, a knowledge-based private firm, is the only private entity in the country that, throughout its operational history, has successfully established and managed dozens of local seismograph networks for dams, nuclear power plants, and major civil engineering projects.
